IA Requirements
The basic requirements for obtaining your inspection authorization are outlined in FAR 65.91. In summary, there are several requirements you need to meet.
First, you must hold a currently effective aviation maintenance technician certificate. Your certificate must have both an airframe and powerplant rating and both must have been effective for at least 3 years.
You must be actively engaged in maintaining aircraft certificated for the 2 year period before you apply.
You also must have a fixed base of operations where you are available in person or over the phone. This fixed base doesn’t need to be where you’ll be performing inspection authorization duties. You must also have the necessary equipment and facilities to correctly inspect airframes, propellers, powerplants, and all other related parts of the aircraft.
Lastly, you must pass the written test indicating you have the necessary knowledge to safely inspect aircraft after major repairs or alterations.
Before You Arrive for the IA Exam
First, you’ll need a completed and signed 8610-1 form in order to take the IA test. You’ll need to obtain this from your local FSDO before you arrive.
This form is only valid for 30 days from issuance so make an appointment with your FSDO to get it signed no more than a couple of weeks before your test date.
Second, you’ll need to have completed the entire 4-day IA course before you can take the IA exam.
Lastly, you’ll also need one form of ID if you’re a US citizen. If you aren’t a US citizen you’ll need to have your passport as well as a second form of identification.
